Help creating a database with a menu to search by category

I am in the process of helping an artist create a database of some of his work but mostly of other material such as exhibition catalogues, essays, project proposals etc.

I'm very new to File Maker but I think it's the right program for the job. So far I understand how to make customizable data entry forms and how to use the search functions.

It is very important to the artist that there be a sort of browse function. Rather than having to do a formal search he wants there to be a sort of menu so that people using the database can search by category. For example, view all of the sculptures at once, or all of the public commissions, or all press coverage.

I'm finding it really difficult to figure out how to create this homepage/menu/table of contents navigation function.

Any direction on the easiest and most intuitive way to do this would be greatly appreciated.
