How develop Thin Client within Filemaker

Hi all,

When using FM Server en Pro clients, when is the server doing all the hard work and sends a small dataset to the clients and when does it sends "all" the data and let the client do the filtering.

My question is triggered by several discussions about portals and filtering I found, while searching performance issues.
One say to avoid portal filtering and use the relationship or use eSQL. But others say it's nonsens and discourage eSQL.

By the way, if you avoid portal filtering... You got a lot of data in your portal, or am I missing something.

Please advice me about how FM process a lay-out request. When is FM fetching and/or filtering on the server, and when on the client.
